Young Chang Action Brackets
Aftermarket replacements for 1990s era Young Chang, Weber, Wurlitzer pianos with expanding or cracking brackets.
These grand action brackets are made of polyethylene glycol. This polymer is extremely strong, heat-resistant, dimensionally stable, and has a very long lifespan, making it ideal for this application. Since mid-2021, our brackets have been used to replace the expanding brackets in hundreds of pianos.
Bracket FAQ (we receive a lot questions about brackets that are already answered here):
Q: Can Supply88 tell me which bracket set I need based on model and serial data?
A: No. You will need to remove the fallboard to count the number of brackets, and determine the difference in the size between the end brackets and the inner brackets (see photo).
Q: How can I determine if the piano I'm servicing is affected by this problem?
A: If it's a 1990s era piano made by Young Chang with grey (not gold) brackets, and the hammers are blocking, or the brackets have cracks, this is likely the case. If you are not certain if the piano was made by Young Chang, measure the foot of the brackets where they attach to the keyframe. End brackets should be 205mm, inner brackets 145 or 170mm.
Q: Will Supply88 ever make brackets for other piano makes/models?
A: No, the development process is too great for something with so little demand. For the one-off bracket replacement situation for non-YC pianos, we suggest making replacement brackets out of pinblock material.
Q: Will replacing the brackets correct the regulation problems caused by expansion?
A: No. Expect to perform a complete regulation as part of the job. No replacement bracket (ours or those made by anyone else) can be expected to be an exact match for the factory brackets, which were never produced to exacting tolerances. The factory regulation worked only for the factory brackets. The slightest variations in the position of the hammer and whippen rails will greatly impact the regulation. In addition to regulation, you may need to make dag and cheek block adjustments to restore a proper strike line (especially in the treble). The product pages below contain more info and instructions.
Q: The expansion is so bad that I can't remove the action. What should I do?
A: It will likely be necessary to destroy the brackets in order to get the action out of the piano. The brackets might crumble if you provide them with enough impact or stress. We've heard of situations where the technician had to saw through the brackets.
